Perforated facade and metal architecture

Discover this perforated architectural facade applied as the exterior skin of the new Aerospace Vocational Training Center in La Rinconada, Seville. The construction of the Integrated Vocational Training Center (CPIFP) and its perforated facade has taken place on a plot of 12.049,30 square meters in La Rinconada, Seville. It has a built area of 10.255 square meters, distributed between a main building and four workshops. The main building has three floors, and it is on the two upper floors that TAS has left its mark with its range of architectural facade profiles. Specifically, it is a perforated facade made with the Dragonera facade profile. The perforated metal facade and its versatility The purpose of installing this folded and micro-perforated sheet cladding is to add an additional layer to the building’s envelope, providing greater insulating protection against extreme temperatures without sacrificing aesthetics and natural lighting. In this way, the application of this type of architectural facade profile adds added value to the building’s architecture, making it a reference in terms of aesthetics without sacrificing a functional and practical solution. Perforated facade design As mentioned earlier, for this project, the Dragonera Facade Profile – Scale 2 and Scale 3 have been applied, manufactured in galvanized steel sheet with R5T7 micro-perforations and double-sided post-coating in RAL 9006 color. For this building, over 500 square meters of the Dragonera Facade Profile have been manufactured and supplied to cover the entire upper part of the facade, serving as a parapet between the windows and the exterior. The asymmetric serrated effect has been achieved thanks to the symmetry of this profile, and a customized design of the facade has been implemented. In this way, Scale 2 has been combined with Scale 3 of the Dragonera Profile, placing them randomly to achieve a unique envelope. Due to TAS’s production process, which is based on the individual cutting, folding, and punching of each sheet, this custom facade design has been successfully manufactured and delivered by TAS without posing a major challenge to the technical department or the factory. Similarly, the corners of the building have been easily resolved thanks to the adaptability and malleability of folded steel. In this case, the geometry of the Dragonera Profile allows for a perfect fit to cover the corner and maintain the same aesthetic throughout the entire facade. Tailored suit for a unique envelope. This project has demanded a high level of involvement from our technical department as a ‘tailored suit’ has been created for the envelope. In this regard, each piece of the Cabrera profile has been custom-made one by one, taking into account the inclination and curvature of each section of the facade for an optimal fit. While zinc is a resilient and durable metal, at TAS, all necessary precautions are always taken during the manufacturing of each profile, as well as in its packaging, to prevent any kind of damage or incidents. For this project, each package of manufactured profiles was delivered in a pallet container directly to the construction site for facade installation. The manufacturing and supply of materials for this project spanned a period of approximately 9 months. Throughout this time, close collaboration between the installation team and our commercial and production departments has been essential to meet all project milestones and work hand in hand with our client at every phase. The envelope, constructed with corrugated zinc sheeting using the Cabrera profile, has been fixed onto a curved metal structure to achieve a wavy effect. Simultaneously, this structure has been attached to S355 steel tubular profiles applied as three-dimensional trusses along the entire perimeter and structure of the building. According to the project’s responsible technical office, CEMOSA, approximately 1,500 tons of steel have been used for the construction of the entire structure. Interior envelope. On the other hand, the internal skin of the building has been resolved with 9,000 m2 of translucent polycarbonate panels in white. Thanks to the R2T4 microperforation of the installed facade profile, it provides a significant amount of natural light to the interior of the building. This unique combination of the interior and exterior cladding of the building allows for an excellent and sustainable architectural solution, as it will reduce energy consumption for lighting the facilities. In terms of sustainability, this building has been conceived following the principles of the circular economy, as the majority of materials used in its construction – steel, zinc, and polycarbonate – are 100% recyclable. Folding sheet metal: Basic concepts

Folding sheet metal Sheet metal folding is a forming process in which a metal sheet is bent to create a three-dimensional shape. This process is common in the manufacturing of various solutions, from industrial components to construction materials. Sheet metal folding is typically carried out using a folding machine, whether manual or automatic, and we will now describe the most relevant aspects to consider in the folding process of sheet metal. What is the neutral fiber? The “neutral fiber” refers to the zone within a sheet of metal where there is no deformation or change in the length of the piece. It is the point at which the bent piece is neither stretched nor compressed during the bending process. Therefore, it could be defined as the line passing through the inside of a sheet and representing the center of the forces acting on that sheet. When a sheet of metal is folded, the outer part of the fold tends to stretch (lengthen), while the inner part compresses (shortens). Between these two areas, there is a zone where there is no change in length, and this zone is the neutral fiber. The location of the neutral fiber is an important factor in sheet metal folding, as it affects how the piece bends and how it distributes forces throughout the folding process. The change in the position of the neutral fiber is determined by the following factors: Bending tolerance and K factor The bending allowance or bending tolerance is a measure of how much additional material from a sheet is required to fold it to the correct size. Bending allowance is determined by considering the bending angle, bending radius, material thickness, and a variable called the K factor. Mathematically, the K factor is the ratio between the position of the neutral fiber (t) and the thickness of the sheet (T). The K factor typically falls within the range of 0.30 to 0.50. The K factor helps identify the tolerance of a folded sheet before defects such as cracks occur and is directly related to the length of the sheet stretched during the bending process. Therefore, it is crucial to know the K factor to achieve the expected results in sheet metal folding and to avoid production overruns due to waste. Bending radius The “bending radius” refers to the distance from the folding axis to the outermost part of a folded sheet. In other words, it is the measurement from the center of the sheet’s curvature radius to the curved outer surface. The bending radius is a critical measure in sheet metal folding, as it affects the final shape of the bent piece. A smaller bending radius creates a more pronounced curvature, while a larger bending radius results in a smoother curve. The bending radius is also related to the material’s ability to bend without breaking. If the bending radius is too small for the material and its thickness, it can cause excessive deformations or even fractures in the sheet. Knowledge of the appropriate bending radius is essential for achieving successful manufacturing and ensuring that the folded sheets maintain the required dimensions and geometry. α = Bending angleβ = Opening angleL = Length of materialr = Bending radiuss = Thickness of steel sheet One of the main activities we carry out at TAS is sheet metal folding. We specialize in cutting metal from coils up to 1,500 mm wide, as well as in folding, punching, and finishing under the highest quality standards. We work with a wide range of metals such as steel, aluminum, zinc, stainless steel, and hot-rolled steel with thicknesses up to 6 mm. Folded metal sheet for facades: Elegance and Resistance in Architecture

Learn about all the benefits of using folded metal sheets to cover and give character to the facade of a building. Folded sheet metal for facades is a material used for facade cladding due to its elegance, versatility and resistance. The bending technique of the metal – whether steel, aluminum, or zinc to name a few examples – creates an attractive visual effect and provides a durable solution for exterior cladding. In this article, we will explore the features, benefits, and applications of folded sheet metal applied to architectural facades. Characteristics of the folded metal sheet for facades The folded sheet metal usually comes in most cases from coils that are unrolled and cut to the length and width necessary for the project in question. Once the sheets are cut from the coil, they are ready to be perforated if necessary, or directly bended. The folds are made in special machines designed for this function called “folders”. In this sense, there are manual folding machines that work in a single direction and automatic folding machines that are capable of folding on both sides, which makes the folding process much easier and faster. The process of generating folds in the sheet to varying degrees and at varying distances from one another creates a visually appealing geometry and texture. Furthermore, these folds not only add an aesthetic element to the facade, but also increase the rigidity and strength of the material. Benefits of folded sheet metal for facades: Sleek and modern aesthetics: The pleat pattern in the sheet metal provides a distinctive and contemporary look to the building’s facade. The variety of shapes and sizes of folds allows the creation of unique and personalized designs, adapted to architectural tastes and needs. Durability and resistance: Metal is a highly resistant and durable material, capable of withstanding adverse weather conditions and resisting corrosion. Folded steel or aluminum sheet metal retains these properties well, ensuring the longevity and reduced maintenance of the exterior cladding. Versatility in design: Folded sheet metal can be used in a variety of facade applications, including commercial, residential and public building cladding. Its flexibility allows it to adapt to different shapes and architectural geometries, creating a dynamic and attractive appearance. Energy efficiency: By combining the folded sheet metal with insulating materials, the energy efficiency of the building is improved by increasing thermal insulation. This contributes to reduce the expense and energy in the interior conditioning of the building. At TAS we are experts with more than 15 years of experience in sheet metal folding. We are capable of folding metal sheets with a length of up to 8 meters and a thickness of 6 mm. Material and qualities used for its manufacture This facade profile has been made of pre-lacquered steel with a thickness of 0.8 mm and its color combines in an unbeatable way with the environment in which the house is located, as well as with the rest of the wooden facade. Benefits of architectural facade profiles As we have already mentioned on some occasion before, the use of perforated facade architectural profiles provides great benefits. The most relevant are highlighted below: Aesthetics and design: Perforated sheets add an attractive aesthetic element to facades. Perforations create interesting patterns and designs that can enhance the architectural appearance of a building. In addition, they allow the play of light and shadow, creating unique visual effects. Ventilation and air flow: The perforations allow the passage of air through the facade. This is especially beneficial in hot climates, as it promotes natural ventilation and helps keep the interior of the building cool, reducing the need for air conditioning systems and improving energy efficiency. Durability and resistance: Architectural profiles made of metals such as galvanized steel or aluminum have high durability and excellent behavior in the face of environmental conditions, such as weathering or corrosion. Low maintenance: Unlike other materials, metals such as steel or aluminum require minimal maintenance, providing a great appearance several years after its application. Sustainability: Much of the metal used to manufacture the architectural profiles developed by TAS come from recycled metals and are 100% recyclable, making them a sustainable and responsible option from an environmental point of view. The elegance of metal In this project specifically, beyond the benefits mentioned, the Menorca facade profile provides an avant-garde style that breaks with the traditional and marks a differentiated style from other homes.
